Mexican President Calderon Says U.S. Consumption Fuels Drug Cartels

Outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon recently did a TV interview with Russia Today, a worldwide news network. In it he discussed Mexico’s relations with the United States and how those relations are complicated by immigration and drug smuggling issues.

While he is right about the U.S. market fueling much of the drug trade through Mexico, he is just as short-sighted as our leaders when it comes drug policy; Mexico has been embroiled in a 5+ year military offensive against the cartels that has only exacerbated the violence and killed over 50,000 people, an offensive started by President Calderon.

Ultimately legalization is the only policy capable of collapsing the black market and the profits made from it. Until officials on both sides of the border are ready to admit that, the carnage will continue.

Oi, vey. Calderon is so full of crap. No one wants to buy that outdoor crap. He’s pissed off about the competition from American growers. That’s why he wants our dispensaries shut down.
