With the Arizona Senate recently passing a bill that would make those receiving unemployment benefits pass a drug test and the U.S. Congress giving its approval, the issue has gained national prominence, as evidenced in the CNN clip below.

Besides some 4th Amendment issues with this idea of drug-testing those who get unemployment, there is the overriding question of medical marijuana in particular. Under this system, any person who decided at anytime in the last few weeks to choose non-toxic marijuana to treat an ailment as opposed to some dangerous and likely addictive prescription drug would lose benefits.

Of course, these same people are treated like criminals in most states every day. But it seems that is not enough. Now they can’t get benefits for a job they lost due to a down economy caused by the same government that now wants to drug test them. Life is a circle, as they say.
