Washington D.C. To Begin Accepting Formal Medical Marijuana Applications

It seems the round of press that the medical marijuana situation in Washington D.C. got a couple days ago due to a protest by advocates has spurred some action within the halls of power in our nation’s capital.
The Washington Times is reporting that the city will begin accepting formal applications to grow and dispense medical marijuana on August 5th, and candidates must get their applications in by September 9th.
Earlier this year, the D.C. Department of Health received 170 letters of intent — 64 for dispensaries and 106 for cultivation centers — from more than 80 separate entities, said agency Director Dr. Mohammad Akhter. City agencies vetted the letters of intent Tuesday, disqualifying 14 dispensary letters and 18 cultivation letters, Dr. Akhter said. That leaves 50 dispensary and 88 cultivation candidates to vying for five and 10 permits, respectively.
“The squeaky wheel gets the grease” is a well-known phrase for a reason. Advocates and patients are fed up and have been making their voices heard. So much so that the press in Washington D.C. has been picking up the rumblings. And if there is one thing politicians don’t need any more of, it’s bad press.
Things seem to be moving in D.C., and advocates need to make sure they keep their new found momentum going forward.
