Florida Lawmakers Sponsor Medical Marijuana Bill

Lawmakers in Florida are sponsoring a bill that would help make medical cannabis legal in the state. On Thursday those lawmakers met with seriously ill patients who would be affected by the bill.
The sponsor of the bill, Democrat Jeff Clemens says the situation is personal to thousands of Floridians.
“We have a lot people suffering here in the state of Florida. I don’t think we need to be telling them that prescription narcotics are the way to go, when we have other, more natural avenues for them,” he said.
True, but that’s the problem. Pharmaceutical companies have a lot of money, and they have a vested interest in medical marijuana staying illegal, as do alcohol companies.
Lawmakers hope to have a resolution voters can vote on in 2012. But they will have a long road to travel, as opponents of medical marijuana try to keep sick people on dangerous prescription drugs instead of giving them the option of safer, more natural cannabis.
