The story of Kathryn Johnston is hideously sad. In a nutshell, her home was raided by Atlanta police in 2006. This scared, elderly woman who lives in a bad neighborhood fired one shot through a door and hit nothing. Police opened up with a barrage of 39 shots, killing her and apparently wounding 3 of their own.

An old woman – who had burglary bars on her windows for protection before the cops cut through them – scared  of a multitude of yelling men in her home used what protection she had left. Little did she know that there is no protection from something like that.

The police were serving a drug search warrant – as you can imagine, no drugs were found in the apartment. In fact, there is dispute whether or not the one informant’s information the cops relied on was ever uttered by the informant. The city will now pay the family of the woman almost $5 million for their monumental screw up.

Money won’t bring Kathryn back, but it does serve as a notice to cops in cities and towns all over this country. Do your job right, or your bosses will be made to pay. And we all know what happens to screw ups when their bosses are made to pay.
