August 25, 2010 — Five drug czars have published a piece in the LA Times criticizing Prop. 19. Paul Armentano from NORML breaks down their piece and responds.

Your Tax Dollars At Work
August 25th, 2010 By: Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director

Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske, along with five previous drug czars (including gambling addict William Bennett), have an op/ed in today’s Los Angeles Times condemning California’s Prop. 19.

Given that the Drug Czar is required by law to oppose any and all efforts that would seek to legalize marijuana — including “any study … relating to the legalization (for a medical use or any other use) of” cannabis — his vitriol should not come as a surprise. Nevertheless, his commentary clearly begs the question: How is it appropriate for Californians to pay taxes to cover the salary of a federal official who spends a significant part of his time telling these same taxpayers how to vote on a statewide ballot measure?

Could someone please remind me why I should believe the people largely responsible for the trillion dollar boondoggle known as the War on Drugs? According to a recent AP article none of the initial ten goals were met in the War on Drugs. Instead, we have jailed over twenty million of our fellow citizens to support a clearly failed policy. Isn’t that like asking a CEO that has just filed bankruptcy advice on how to run a business? I guess that’s alright if you want to bankrupt your company but you may want to look elsewhere if you plan to stay in business and make a profit. I’ve lost patience with those in power who wish to dig us deeper into the problem by suggesting that they need more money to do what got us into this mess in the first place. I believe that passing proposition 19 will do more to keep marijuana out of the hands of kids than the federal government has done in the last forty years of failed policy. I support passage of proposition 19. Please vote on November 2. Your vote is important!

Alcohol = Hard Drug (like heroine, cocaine, extacy, etc)

Marijuana = Soft Drug (like coffee, chocolat etc)

I clearly remember pics of Obama drinking beer, thus biasing his opinions.
