One County – Two Weeks – 223,555 Marijuana Plants Eradicated

This could really be a continuation of my last post. In the span of two weeks in Tuolumne County, CA, authorities have pulled over 223,000 cannabis plants.
The street value is estimated at $447 million on the assumption that each plant could yield a pound of marijuana worth $2,000, according to Sgt. Jeff Wilson of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department.
Imagine all the medical marijuana patients in California that could help. Now imagine this:
According to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, California’s top five counties in 2008 for marijuana discoveries were Lake (499,508 plants), Tulare (395,489), Shasta (394,375), Mendocino (231,802) and Humboldt (145,762).
That’s almost 1.5 million plants in 5 counties. These are staggering numbers. Imagine if President Obama got on TV tonight and announced we were taking 1.5 million perfectly good flu shots and setting them on fire. Our first question would obviously be: why?
But this is what we do with confiscated marijuana. Not only to we spend a ton of money of finding these plants and pulling them, but then we destroy them, making the whole process truly useless.
