Medical Marijuana Will Be On Oregon Ballot This Fall

Oregon Measure 28 – a ballot measure to allow state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries to sell cannabis – has enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot according to the Oregon Secretary of State. As the law stands now, patients have to grow their medicine themselves, or have someone grow it for them. If this measure passes they will have the choice of growing, or buying from a dispensary.

One woman says she’s relieved it got on the ballot and hopes enough ‘yes’ votes in November will help her sick husband.

“His appetite, the way he sleeps, it’s very important for him. And if he could just go to a dispensary and purchase it, it would be so much more convenient,” said Beverly Tierney.

“I think that’s cool, as long as you’re still allowed to grow it. I don’t see a problem with it,” said Daniel Robinson.

“It would make it a lot easier for people to not have to hide it, and not have to try and be sneaky,” said Bret Barton.

Another good measure we need to get behind and get passed this fall. Making it easier for patients to get their medicine should be the goal of every state, so if you live in Oregon or know someone who does, get the word out.

State-licensed dispensaries seem to be the trend in many states, and we should get behind any measure that creates more of them. As we know, some counties and cities within medical marijuana states are looking to ban dispensaries and collectives, or close as many as they can. How this wouldn’t be a detriment to cannabis patients is a mystery to me.

So congratulations to all those in Oregon who helped gather nearly 83,000 signatures. Patients of your state will thank you.

These initiatives need to be on the ballots of every state. Hopefully we can reach a tipping point and turn the public opinion enough to have every state enact a medical marijuana law.

  2. Oregon Initiative 28 will provide patients safe access through nonprofit dispensaries, generate revenue, fund medical research and establish a program to assist low-income and homebound patients. All while preserving patients right to have their own garden and creating new jobs! It is truly a win-win for the state of Oregon.
